KUCHING: A husband and wife died in a fatal collision at Jalan FAC early yesterday morning. They were heading towards Matang from Kuching.  

State Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Bingkok John, said in an official statement, that the accident, which involved a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and a compact vehicle, happened at around 6.45 am.

“An investigation found that the couple, who were in the compact  vehicle, drove out from the Jalan Taman Palma Matang junction and then moved to the left lane towards Matang.

“Their vehicle was then suddenly hit from the rear by a speeding MPV, resulting in the a  fatal collision on the road,” said Bingkok.

He added that the couple’s vehicle crashed and hit the streetlight post on the left side of the road while the MPV also crashed into a streetlight post on the road divider.

Bingkok said the couple were trapped in the driver’s seat and the left passenger seat of the compact vehicle.

“Paramedics from the Sarawak General Hospital were on scene but the couple was pronounced.

“This incident is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said the chief.

The driver of the MPV suffered injuries to his limbs and was sent to the Sarawak General Hospital by an EMRS unit from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
