KUCHING: A lorry driver working for a courier company was fined RM3,000 in default seven months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for retaining stolen computer equipment belonging to a customer.

Alexander Jordan Annie Teresa, 24, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan to a charge under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of five years, or a fine, or both.

He was found in possession of a box containing an Asus monitor and two Lenovo CPU units belonging to an electronics distribution company. The offense took place at his residence in Taman Desa Bumiko, Batu Kawa, around 5.10 pm on Feb 10.

According to the case facts, the courier company’s security control manager lodged a police report on Feb 3 after being alerted by higher management about the loss of 71 parcels scheduled for delivery to branches in Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Sungai Merah, and Kuching.

CCTV footage showed that all parcels had been handed over to the company’s driver but were not delivered to the Kuching headquarters as scheduled. The parcels were supposed to arrive in Kuching before being passed on to the last-mile delivery driver, who is identified as Alexander.

Investigations revealed that Alexander had driven a lorry and a van, both filled with parcels, to an area without CCTV coverage. The lorry returned after 15 minutes, but the van did not.

The complainant suspected his involvement in the loss of parcels worth RM206,159.85.

A police report was filed, which led to Alexander’s arrest on Feb 6. Further checks revealed that the stolen items were in his possession.

Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng prosecuted the case, while Alexander was unrepresented.
