KUCHING: A courier worker was sentenced to two months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for stealing a parcel containing a smartphone.
Jefri Sahmat, 25, from Kota Samarahan, pleaded guilty to the charge when it was read before Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali.
He was accused of stealing a smartphone belonging to a 40-year-old man at a courier company premises on Jalan Swasta at about 3.37 am on January 15.
Jefri was charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a possible fine upon conviction.
According to court facts, the company’s human resources officer was informed on January 17 that the parcel had been emptied.
CCTV footage later showed Jefri taking the smartphone from the parcel. A police report was lodged, and investigations led to his arrest.
The stolen smartphone was recovered and seized as evidence.
The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Afiq Safly Nor Kazly. Jefri appeared in court without a lawyer.
