KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here today has set January 7, 2026, for the next case management mention of a man charged with murdering his three-year-old girlfriend’s daughter last October.
Mohammad Shukri Ryan, 32, faces a charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code for allegedly killing the child at a house in Kampung Rampangi at 7:45 pm on October 7.
Magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali fixed the date after Deputy Public Prosecutor, Chuah Kai Sheng, informed the court that the post-mortem report was not yet ready.
No plea was recorded from Shukri when the charge was first read to him on October 16.
If convicted, he faces the mandatory death penalty, or 30 to 40 years’ jail if not sentenced to death along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
No bail was granted, and the court ordered that he remain in remand.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said that on October 8, police received a report from a 52-year-old local man that his friend’s child had died the previous night at 9:45 pm.
Preliminary investigations suggested that the child had been abused to death.
The accused, who is the child’s mother’s boyfriend, was arrested at Kampung Krian, Jalan Padawan, at 11:00 am on October 9.
Alexson added that Shukri has six previous criminal records related to drugs, and his initial urine test came back positive for drugs.
