KUCHING: Creative and practical skills in the beauty and arts industry can open pathways to professional careers and entrepreneurship, according to practitioners and educators at the Beauty Arts & Creative Showcase here last Saturday (Sept 19).
The showcase brought together practitioners from various fields, including tattoo artistry, makeup, eyelash extensions and nail art, to share their experiences and highlight opportunities within the industry.
Enterprise Growth Consultant and Trainer Chris Fam, founder of Chris’s Consultancy Firm, said the event aimed to demonstrate how practical skills could progress beyond basic services into professional careers and business ventures.
“A skill can become a profession. A profession can become a business, and a business can create opportunities for others,” she told Sarawak Tribune recently.
Chris, who began her career in the beauty industry before moving into professional training, skills development and business consultancy, said practical skills combined with professional knowledge and business understanding could provide younger people with alternative pathways to build sustainable careers.
The showcase also featured internationally recognised Sarawakian tattoo artist Eric Kueh, whose career has taken him to international tattoo competitions, including events in London and Perpignan, France.
Kueh’s achievements highlighted how local artistic talent could reach international platforms while demonstrating the potential for specialised creative skills to develop into professional careers beyond Sarawak.
Also participating were tattoo artists James Lim and Sherman Ho, professional makeup artist Phu Chek, eyelash extension educator Angeline Kiu and nail art educator Amy Wee.
The practitioners represented various areas of the industry, including tattoo artistry, makeup, eyelash extensions and nail art.
The showcase also provided an opportunity for practitioners from different disciplines to connect, share their experiences and highlight the range of career and entrepreneurial opportunities available through skills and creativity.
For Chris, the event was about encouraging a broader understanding of the arts and beauty industry and the value of developing practical skills.
“Skills can be the starting point for individuals to build their careers and businesses, and eventually create opportunities for others,” she said.
The showcase underscored the potential of the arts and beauty sector as a platform for skills development, creativity, entrepreneurship and professional growth in Sarawak.
