KUCHING: Cricket Development Sarawak (CDS) took a major step in grassroots sports development with the launch of a two-day introductory programme at SMK Bau.
Held from May 14 to 15, the programme attracted enthusiastic participation from around 60 students.
Head of Development for Sarawak Cricket, Haikal Harith, described the event as a fun and successful initiative, especially for students who were new to the sport.
“Basic cricket skills and an introduction to the game were shared with both students and teachers,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted today.
Haikal expressed hope that more schools across Sarawak would consider adopting cricket as the Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) offers a clear pathway for student athletes.
“With the support of the Sarawak Sports Corporation and the Sarawak State Education Department, the association aims to expand cricket’s reach, especially in rural areas where there is great potential and untapped talent,” he said.

He added that Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, and Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, have also encouraged stakeholders to work together in developing cricket across the state.
The positive response at SMK Bau marks another milestone in CDS’ mission to build a strong foundation for cricket in Sarawak.
Looking ahead, Haikal said the SCA is preparing for a district tour after the Gawai festive period, with planned stops in Mukah, Saratok, Lubok Antu, Simunjan and Tebedu.
“For a start, it would be good if we could cover Kuching to Mukah this year before expanding further,” he said.
He also expressed hope that more private companies will be open to supporting sports development in Sarawak through sponsorship.
