KUCHING: Renewed support from schools and parents has revived the Cricket Development Sarawak (CDS) Under-12 Cricket Programme, involving 90 participants in a week-long training and coaching initiative.

Running from July 20 to 27, the programme has brought together students and teachers from Kuching, Padawan, Samarahan and Simunjan, for structured cricket training and coaching development.

According to Director of Development Cricket, Haikal Harith, this is not the first time the programme has been held, but it marks a meaningful restart after a long hiatus – made possible through renewed support from the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and Sarawak State Education Department (JPN Sarawak).

“The programme aims to develop students’ fundamental cricket skills, game understanding, and positive values such as teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship, while also empowering teachers to sustain cricket activities in schools and identify young talents for further development,” he told Sarawak Tribune today.

While not the first of its kind, this edition of the Under-12 Programme represents a significant revival driven by growing demand from schools and parents for more structured training camps.

“It is also part of our SCA Talent Identification Program, designed to scout potential players for enrolment into our Cricket Development Centres next year,” Haikal added.

With additional training camps and talent scouting initiatives in the pipeline, CDS hopes to strengthen Sarawak’s cricket ecosystem starting with passionate young beginners at the grassroots level.
