KUCHING: The Blood Bank of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is urgently appealing to healthy, eligible members of the public, especially donors with blood types A and AB, to come forward and donate, following a significant increase in demand over the past three weeks.
In a statement, SGH reported that blood consumption remained high due to chronic patients and emergency cases requiring immediate transfusion.
The hospital uses approximately 70–80 bags of blood daily, while statewide usage averages 150 bags per day.
Several current cases highlight the urgent need for blood, including a 14-year-old boy with leukaemia (blood type A) who requires two to four bags of blood almost daily due to frequent bleeding caused by severely low platelet levels, which, if they fall below 10,000/microlitre, place him at high risk of fatal internal bleeding, especially in the brain.
Another child with Beta Thalassaemia Major (also blood type A) requires three transfusions this week to support normal growth and maintain stable health.
In a third case, a 38-year-old woman with blood type A suffered a brain haemorrhage resulting from uncontrolled hypertension and urgently needs four bags of blood to undergo a life-saving surgery.
Given the urgency of these cases, the SGH Blood Bank is once again calling on the public, particularly regular blood donors and individuals with A and AB blood types, to donate and help ensure the blood supply remains sufficient for patients in critical need.
“Your donation can save lives. We appeal to the generosity of the public to help us maintain an adequate and stable blood supply,” the Blood Bank stated.
