SARIKEI: A crocodile that had sparked fear among residents with its repeated sightings was finally caught in a trap near the old ferry terminal here today.
The massive reptile, often spotted by local fishermen and anglers near Taman Sri Nyelong, had raised safety concerns in recent weeks.
Following public complaints about its presence, the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) took action and installed traps along Sungai Nyelong.
The crocodile’s capture has brought much relief to the community, with many gathering to witness the reptile inside a cage.
Sarikei fire station chief, Arrahman Chik, said they were alerted by SFC around 12:00 pm for assistance in transporting the reptile.
“A team was dispatched to the scene, where they found a large crocodile had been caught in the trap.
“We helped move the cage, with the crocodile inside, safely to shore before hitching it to the back of a pick-up truck,” he said.
The operation, which also involved members of the Sarikei Civil Defence Force (APM), concluded at 12:50 pm.
Further details on the reptile’s gender, length and weight remain unknown, as authorities have yet to disclose them.
