KUCHING: The Kuching Car Free Morning programme has revived the city’s weekend atmosphere, with large crowds flocking to the city centre to take part in recreational activities in a vehicle-free environment.

As early as 6 am, members of the public were seen gathering at key locations with enthusiasm following a month-long break during Ramadan.

At Padang Merdeka, visitors from all walks of life took the opportunity to enjoy the city without motor vehicles while engaging in healthy activities.

Many attended with their families for a leisurely walk, while others jogged and exercised with friends and partners.

Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) said the programme, which runs until 10 am, covers several main areas including Padang Merdeka, the Kuching Waterfront, Pangkalan Sapi and the vicinity of the Darul Hana Bridge.

It said the initiative provides an opportunity for the public to experience the city in a safer, more relaxed setting, while promoting a healthy, active and community-friendly lifestyle.

“This much-anticipated programme allows the public to enjoy urban spaces without motor vehicles, while encouraging activities such as walking, jogging, cycling and group fitness with family and friends,” it said.

DBKU also welcomed continued participation by Kuching residents, describing the programme as a platform to promote healthy living and enhance the city’s environment.

Beyond promoting physical and mental well-being, the initiative also supports environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and air pollution in urban areas.

At the same time, it fosters stronger social interaction and a sense of unity among Kuching’s diverse communities, it added.
