SIBU: Authorities seized 22 cryptocurrency mining servers and electrical cables from a two-storey shophouse at Jalan Rantau Panjang Jaya here in a recent power theft bust.

Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB), in a statement today, said the illegal activity was uncovered during a joint operation by its retail and operations arm, Syarikat SESCO Bhd (SESCO), and the police.

“The premises were found to have illegally tapped electricity directly from the incoming mains located along the five-foot way,” the statement said.

SEB said the unauthorised connection posed serious safety hazards, including risks of fire, electrocution, and infrastructure damage.

The theft is estimated to have cost RM15,000 in monthly losses.

A police report has been lodged, and the case is being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance.

“Those convicted of electricity theft may face a fine of up to RM200,000 or a jail term of up to five years,” SEB warned.

The utility company also reminded property owners to check electrical wiring before renting out their premises, as they could be held liable for any illegal power connections.

“Warning signs of power theft include low electricity bills despite high usage and visible or hidden wiring connected to mains,” it added.

The public is urged to report suspicious activities anonymously via SEB’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or email customercare@sarawakenergy.com.

All reports will be kept strictly confidential.
