SIBU: A cryptocurrency mining operation at a shophouse in Jalan Aman here has been uncovered by Sarawak Energy’s retail and operational arm, Syarikat Sesco Berhad (Sesco), for stealing electricity.

During a routine inspection, Sesco’s meter inspection team discovered 32 cryptocurrency mining rigs and direct tapping cables concealed behind signboards, used to bypass electricity meters. This illegal setup resulted in an estimated loss of over RM20,000 in monthly unbilled electricity consumption.

“The operation was detected after Sesco’s technical team noticed irregular electricity usage patterns. Further investigations revealed that the theft was linked to the tenant of the premises, suspected of operating the mining setup. Authorities are also probing whether the landlord was complicit or failed to perform due diligence in vetting the tenant.

“Both parties are being investigated under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance, which imposes penalties of up to RM200,000 in fines and/or five years imprisonment upon conviction,” according to a press release, today (Dec 4).

Apart from financial losses, such illegal activities pose significant safety risks. The use of unauthorised direct tapping cables violates Sesco’s safety standards, creating fire hazards, risks of electrocution and potential power outages that could disrupt nearby homes and businesses.

Sarawak Energy has called on landlords to thoroughly vet their tenants to prevent illegal use of their properties. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to combating power theft, highlighting ongoing investments in advanced detection technologies and training for its technical teams.

The public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities involving electricity theft to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com. All reports will be treated with strict confidentiality.
