KUCHING: The Congress of Union of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) Sarawak (CNS) has expressed its support for the school’s reopening being postponed due to a surge in Covid-19 cases recently.
Its chairman Omar Bahrein Unin said that this is particularly worrying as the Covid-19 infection in the zone has feasted to almost all districts and villages with over 600 cases daily.
“The highly contagious Delta Variant is widely feared, with the majority of cases detected in the southern zone.
“The situation is alarming not only for the students but also for the residents of the zones in general if the school reopens in September,” he said.
Omar mentioned that despite the situation in central and north zones that are reasonably under control, he believes that it would be best if schools in those areas were also postponed to avoid any unpredictable circumstances.
“This is because students can be easily infected by the coronavirus.
“However, if the situation in other zones is proven to be safe, the government will decide on school reopening,” he stated.
In saying this, he expressed his concerns with the situation for students who are obliged to study in home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) environment, given the various constraints that they might have experienced.
“We hope that, in this situation, both parents and teachers will continue to play an appropriate role in assisting and educating the children during the pandemic.
“We also hope that parents of civil servants who work regular hours, as well as overtime, can effectively manage their time and focus on their children’s education,” he added.
