MIRI: In a vivid celebration of Sarawak’s cultural diversity, children aged six to 12 took to the stage at Riam Emart, Miri, on Monday (May 12), donning traditional costumes representing the state’s rich ethnic heritage.

The event, titled ‘Little Ms & Mr Cultural 2025’, was held in conjunction with the upcoming Gawai Dayak festivities, and has been hailed as more than a mere costume competition.

It offered young Sarawakians a chance to embody their cultural identities while being guided by their parents, a gesture praised by state leaders as a reflection of intergenerational unity.

Speaking at the event, Minister for Transport, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin emphasised the broader significance of such programmes.

“This is very encouraging as it demonstrates intergenerational unity, where cultural values are not only inherited but also cherished and celebrated together,” he said.

Lee, who also represents the Senadin constituency, stressed the role of children as the foundation of Sarawak’s future.

“Children are the most valuable asset and the hope for the future of the nation. What we do today to shape, educate, and guide them will determine the future of our society,” he said.

The minister said fostering cultural awareness must begin early in life.

“Through events like this, we cultivate a love for culture among children from a young age, so that they grow up with pride in Sarawak’s diverse and harmonious identity,” he added.

The programme arrives at a time when Malaysia’s pluralistic fabric continues to be a point of national discourse.

Sarawak, known for its relative harmony among ethnic and religious communities, is often cited as a model of peaceful coexistence.

“We are proud to live in an atmosphere of harmony and unity among different races and religions. We not only accept cultural diversity, but celebrate it,” Lee said.

Beyond its symbolic value, the event also served as a developmental platform for the children.

Lee highlighted the importance of holistic child development, noting that in today’s increasingly complex world, education must go beyond academic achievement.

“Children learn to speak in front of an audience, communicate, and build self-identity , all invaluable life skills.

“Furthermore, healthy competitions like this can train children to handle pressure positively, accept outcomes openly, and learn from experience,” he said.

The event attracted parents, community leaders, and members of the public, with many applauding the children’s poise and confidence.
