MIRI: A recent academic exchange between Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and the University of Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE) is set to strengthen cross-border cooperation in business education, research, and industry engagement, with both institutions poised to reap long-term benefits.
The visitors, led by Associate Professor, Dr Goi Chai Lee, and senior academics, Dr Lynn Ling and Dr Fayrene Chieng, from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Business, were welcomed by UBDSBE’s senior leadership team, including Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Dean, Dr Masairol Masri.
Billed as a step forward in regional academic diplomacy, the dialogue focused on aligning educational strategies, sharing research capabilities, and enhancing industry partnerships.
Both parties emphasised the importance of preparing graduates for an increasingly complex and interconnected global economy.
“This was a highly productive and forward-looking exchange. We identified several areas for joint initiatives from collaborative research to co-developing industry-relevant curricula and exploring projects with real-world impact,” said Dr Goi.
UBDSBE, recognised for its strategic role in Brunei’s knowledge economy, echoed similar sentiments.
Deputy Deans, Dr Thuraya Farhana Said, Dr Lutfi Abdul Razak, and Dr Wardah Azimah Sumardi, emphasised the value of such collaborations in fostering innovation and sustainable development across the region.
Of particular note was the shared commitment to supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with proposed projects aimed at generating both local and international impact.
“These discussions are not just about academic ties they are about creating a regional platform where institutions can jointly shape the future of business education and economic growth,” Dr Goi added.
“We are aligning our efforts with Curtin 2030’s strategic pillars of sustainability, community impact, and global engagement.”
For both Curtin Malaysia and UBDSBE, the partnership presents opportunities to broaden their academic networks, engage more deeply with industry, and jointly nurture a new generation of business leaders equipped to address global challenges.
As Southeast Asia positions itself as a hub for innovation and sustainable enterprise, such collaborations mark a timely investment in regional resilience and knowledge exchange.
