MIRI: In a significant stride toward preparing for careers in the construction industry, construction management and civil and construction engineering students at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently undertook the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Green Card online test on campus.
The test was conducted under the supervision of CIDB officer Ainol Asma Mohd Norawi, following a preparatory briefing on Green Card application procedures earlier in the year.
The initiative underscores Curtin Malaysia’s dedication to equipping its students with the qualifications necessary for success in the construction sector.
Head of the Department for Built Environment at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Humanities and Health Sciences, Dr Low Wai Wah highlighted the university’s proactive approach.
“These programmes reflect Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to ensuring our students, particularly those in construction-related disciplines such as the Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management and Bachelor of Engineering in Civil and Construction Engineering, are well-prepared for industrial training and beyond,” she said.
The two programmes are delivered by the Department of Built Environment, and the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, respectively.
The CIDB Green Card is a critical credential mandated by the Malaysian Construction Industry Development Board Act 1994 (Act 520). It provides construction personnel with legal access to construction sites and serves as a safety net through its protection plan, offering coverage for accidents or, in unfortunate cases, death.
“This initiative not only facilitates our students’ compliance with industry requirements but also underscores the importance of safety and professionalism in construction,” added Dr Low.
Students who successfully completed the test are now eligible to obtain their CIDB Green Card from the CIDB Miri office. With the card in hand, they are fully equipped to participate in industrial training and contribute meaningfully to the construction industry.
Dr Low commended the collaboration between the Department of Built Environment and Health Sciences, and the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering, which brought the initiative to fruition.
She further commented that this initiative highlights Curtin Malaysia’s role in producing industry-ready graduates and its commitment to bridging the gap between education and real-world industry demands.
