MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) students have once again showcased their cybersecurity prowess, dominating the recent BERAMBEH Capture The Flag (CTF) 2024 competition in Kuching.

Competing against top regional talent, Curtin Malaysia’s teams, HotChocolate and CTF Monkeys, secured impressive results.

HotChocolate clinched the coveted first-place title, while CTF Monkeys finished in fifth place.

Held at the Borneo Cultures Museum, the BERAMBEH CTF, organised by Raw Security (rawSEC), provided a challenging platform for young cybersecurity enthusiasts.

Participants tackled real-world cybersecurity threats, testing their skills and strategic thinking.

HotChocolate team members, Kelvin Voon Zhi Ming, Law Boon Jun, and Michael Chai Chon Yun, were mentored by Dr. Sivaraman Eswaran, Senior Lecturer and Cybersecurity Programme Coordinator at Curtin Malaysia.

“We are incredibly proud of our students’ achievements in both the BERAMBEH CTF and the recent Curtin Malaysia CTF Hackathon 2024 v2.0,” said Terence Tan, Head of Curtin Malaysia’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in a statement.

Curtin Malaysia students also excelled in the university’s own CTF Hackathon 2024 v2.0, a 24-hour nationwide cybersecurity competition organised in partnership with the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

HotChocolate, with team member Gigi Hii Shu Qi, secured a top-10 finish.

“These CTF competitions demonstrate Curtin Malaysia’s commitment to bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world cybersecurity challenges,” added Tan.

“Our students are gaining invaluable experience that will undoubtedly propel their careers as cybersecurity professionals.”
