KUCHING: The Sarawak Customs Department has foiled a syndicate distributing dangerous drugs, seizing 6,360 Ecstasy (MDMA) pills weighing 1.908 kilogrammes (kg) and valued at RM318,000.

Director Datuk Norizan Yahya said the seizure was made at a courier company during a routine inspection by the department’s Narcotics Branch on October 27 at 2:00 pm.

“Officers discovered the drugs in an unclaimed package in the courier’s storage area.

“MDMA is classified as a dangerous drug under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and the case is still under investigation,” he said in a statement.

He added that the syndicate used courier services to transport drugs by land, often providing fake recipient information to avoid detection.

Under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, offenders face the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if life imprisonment is imposed, they must also receive at least 15 strokes of the cane.

Norizan then said the department remains committed to strengthening law enforcement to combat smuggling and dangerous drug activities.

“We urge the public to cooperate with us by providing information on smuggling activities to protect the safety and well-being of our nation,” he said.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity anonymously via Talian Bebas Tol Kastam 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest customs office.
