KUCHING: A team of officers from the Narcotics Department of the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) in Sarawak inspected a courier company at Jalan Swasta, here, on Jan 15 during an operation.
The operation which was carried out around 11.30 am, used a JKDM Drug Detection Dog (APD) to inspect the company’s ‘Unclaimed Goods’ section.
According to Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya, the inspection led to the discovery of a suspicious parcel wrapped as a Christmas gift.
Further examination revealed the presence of ecstasy pills weighing approximately 1,780 grammes, with an estimated street value of RM297,260.
The illicit substances was concealed within the festive package.
The contraband was seized under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Ecstasy is classified as a dangerous drug under Part I, First Schedule of the Act.
Authorities believe that drug traffickers used courier services to send the package to a non-existent address, deliberately leaving it unclaimed for an extended period to evade detection.
The case is currently under investigation under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties.
If convicted, offenders face either the death penalty or life imprisonment. In cases where a life sentence is imposed, the convicted individual must also receive no fewer than 15 strokes of the cane.
