MIRI: Officers from the Sarawak Customs Department have seized a total of 4,080 grams of methamphetamine, valued at RM130,560 in two separate operations here.
According to Sarawak Customs director Norizan Yahya, the first seizure took place on March 24 at around 9.30 am, when a team from the Narcotics Unit, JKDM Miri, conducted an inspection at a courier service company located at Eastwood Valley Industrial Park.
During the operation, a Drug Detection Dog (APD) alerted officers to a suspicious package.
Upon inspection, officers discovered two packets, disguised as tea packages, containing 2,040 grams of methamphetamine.
The parcel was addressed to an abandoned property. The drugs, with an estimated street value of RM65,280, were seized under Section 30(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
Methamphetamine is classified as a dangerous drug under Part I, Schedule 1 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
In a separate operation at the same premises, the Narcotics Unit, aided once again by a Drug Detection Dog, intercepted another suspicious package.
Further examination revealed an additional two tea packages filled with 2,040 grams of methamphetamine, similarly addressed to an abandoned house.
In this case, the drugs had been concealed among food products. This second seizure is also valued at RM65,280.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing. Authorities believe the modus operandi involved sending drugs via air courier services from Malaya to Sarawak, with parcels disguised either among food products or as legitimate goods, and addressed to abandoned locations to avoid detection.
Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction for trafficking in dangerous drugs.
