KUCHING: The Sarawak Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) is set to tighten its policies to impose stricter penalties on errant companies that fail to comply with regulations.

Its chairman Michael Kong Feng Nian said that the board recognises the need for stricter enforcement to safeguard all road users, following last year’s statistics on commercial vehicles from the Road Transport Department (RTD) and police.

“In 2024, enforcement agencies took firm actions to ensure compliance within the commercial vehicle industry, where RTD have issued a total of 11,511 summonses, while the police issued 8,803 summonses

“Among the most common violations were overloading, non-compliance with permits, and safety breaches by commercial vehicles. These infractions pose serious risks to road users and undermine road safety standards,” he said in a statement.

Kong added that Sarawak CVLB aims to create a safer and more responsible commercial vehicle industry, while reducing the risks posed by non-compliance.

That said, he called on the public to assist in reporting traffic violations involving commercial vehicles to Sarawak CVLB, via WhatsApp, on 011-2425 2754, or email Sarawak RTD directly via aduantrafik.sarawak@jpj.gov.my.

“Public assistance plays a crucial role in enforcement efforts, allowing Sarawak RTD to act swiftly and enabling Sarawak CVLB to effectively carry out its responsibilities.

“Together, through enforcement and public cooperation, we can create a safer and more regulated road environment for all,” he said.
