KUCHING: Sarawak has progressed rapidly in cycling in recent years, supported by strong state backing and expanded sports infrastructure.

Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) president Datuk Amarjit Singh Gill said that Sarawak’s progress reflected effective leadership, long-term planning and sustained investment, positioning the state as a key contributor to national and regional cycling development.

He also highlighted Sarawak’s potential to play a wider role in East Malaysia and neighbouring regions.

“The proposed velodrome would further strengthen athlete pathways and support track cycling development, benefiting not only Sarawak but also Sabah, Brunei and Kalimantan,” he said at the Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA) appreciation dinner last night (Dec 14).

He added that the state government’s consistent backing of sports associations and expansion of facilities demonstrated a clear vision to establish Sarawak as a leading sporting hub in the country.

Meanwhile, SCA president Irawan Sudarsono said the association’s achievements were the result of collective effort across the entire cycling ecosystem, involving athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, sponsors and partner agencies.

Irawan delivers his welcoming remarks.

“Sarawak cycling remains focused on strengthening grassroots programmes, enhancing high-performance pathways and empowering clubs and coaches to ensure sustainable growth and long-term success,” he said.

Irawan added that the association aimed not only to produce medal winners but also to build a structured and inclusive system that enables young riders to progress from community-level participation to national programmes.

“With continued collaboration and shared commitment, I am confident that Sarawak can set new benchmarks for cycling development in Malaysia,” he said.
