Cyclist dies after four-wheel collision

MIRI: A cyclist was killed instantly in a road crash involving a four-wheel drive vehicle along Jalan Miri-Pujut on Friday evening.

The fatal collision occurred at about 7.10 pm near the Boulevard Supermarket junction in the Miri district.

Miri police confirmed they had received a report on the incident, which involved a local male cyclist believed to be aged between 45 and 50.

Initial investigations found that the four-wheel drive, driven by a 23-year-old local man, was travelling from Miri town centre towards Permyjaya when it collided with a cyclist exiting the Boulevard Supermarket junction.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the four-wheel drive escaped uninjured.

Police said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Miri district police chief ACP Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah urged anyone with information on the incident to come forward to assist investigations. Members of the public can contact the investigating officer, Insp Mohammad Amiruddin Hamdan, at 018-9529957 or 085-430479.

He also appealed to families who may have lost contact with relatives to report to the nearest police station.

Police reiterated their call for all road users to exercise caution, practise defensive driving and strictly observe traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
