KUCHING: Sarawak is set to make history with the first-ever Sarawak International Open DanceSport Championship 2025, scheduled to take place on September 20 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK).
Deputy Minister for Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said the championship marks a milestone for the state’s sports tourism and creative industry while providing an international platform for home-grown dance talents.
The event is organised by the Sarawak DanceSport Association (SDA), sanctioned by the Malaysia DanceSport Federation (MYDF), and supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) and the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP).
About 200 officials, competitors and guests will be arriving from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, India and China.
More than 300 spectators are expected on the night of the competition to witness thrilling performances in the Latin, Standard and Breaking divisions, contested across Open, Adult, Youth, Junior and Juvenile categories.
Participants will vie for the Sarawak Open titles and a prize pool worth RM25,000, including RM15,000 in cash vouchers.
Snowdan said the championship is not just about competition but also about showcasing Sarawak’s hospitality and spirit of goodwill.
“This championship is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our legendary Sarawak hospitality and to embody the Olympic spirit of goodwill and friendship among all participants,” he said.
He added that the event would serve as both training and exposure for local officials and dancers while highlighting Sarawak’s role as a destination for sports tourism.
“We invite everyone to join us this September to witness the grace, energy and passion of DanceSport at its finest. Together, let us celebrate talent, culture and friendship here in Sarawak,” he said.
