SARATOK: The existence of ‘dango’ or temporary shelters built during the regatta season here has added vibrancy to the festivities.
Kalaka Assemblyman, Mohamad Duri, said that while other places may also have such practices, the atmosphere of the regatta in Saratok is further elevated by the presence of the ‘dango’.
“I highly commend the spirit of the residents who built ‘dango’ across the Saratok town area. It is like a small village, so much so that some have dubbed it ‘Regatta Village’.
“Congratulations to the residents of Kampung Kupang in particular, as well as those from the surrounding longhouses. You have preserved the heritage of our ancestors.
“More than that, this living tradition is something the younger generation can continue to experience today,” he told Suara Sarawak.
He explained that the locals invested significant resources to support the festivities in Saratok.
“I was informed that it’s not just about monetary expenses, but also time, energy and other resources.
“Even though there was no official announcement of any competition or prizes beforehand, the spirit to preserve this tradition remains very strong. I am impressed.
“God-willing, in the future, we will propose to the organisers to enhance the event by offering better prizes or providing basic amenities for those setting up dango across the river,” he added.
This year, the award for the most beautiful ‘dango’ was won by the shelter owned by Hossein Jamali.
Second and third places went to Rosidi Bujang and Jobli Juli, respectively.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed to enlivening the atmosphere of Regata Kalaka 2025,” he said.
In a separate development, for the decorated boat competition, the champion was The Fire Hornet, that took home RM1,200 and a trophy.
Meanwhile, Bujang Sigat was the runner-up, receiving RM800 and a trophy, while Sahabat Santai took third place with RM600 and a trophy.
In total, 15 boats competed that night.
