KUCHING: Danial Hakim credited his parents, friends and coaches after winning gold in the Men’s Junior Elimination Race, saying their support made the victory possible.
The 18-year-old Danial, who hails from Kuching and rides for Buceros Cycling Club, delivered a standout performance at the Asian Track Championships 2026 in Tagaytay City, Philippines, being held from Mar 25 to 31.
He emerged champion ahead of South Korea’s Kim Sewon and Hong Kong’s Yau Chung Ming.
Despite the physically demanding nature of the elimination race, Danial remained composed throughout, showcasing both tactical awareness and endurance to outlast a competitive field.
“A bit tired but very happy. I wouldn’t have won without the support of my parents, friends and coaches, so this win is for them,” he told Sarawak Tribune when contacted.
Danial’s triumph not only marks a significant personal milestone but also highlights the growing strength of Sarawak’s cycling development, with clubs like Buceros continuing to produce athletes capable of excelling on the continental stage.
He is also set to feature in the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which will be held in Selangor this August.
The victory adds to Malaysia’s medal tally at the championships and signals a bright future ahead for the young rider as he continues to develop in the sport.
