Sarawak Oil & Gas rights
KUCHING: The Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak has expressed its willingness to collaborate with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in advocating for Sarawak’s oil and gas rights, including securing a 30 per cent stake in Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS).
DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak director of Political Education, Soo Tien Ren, said that if GPS, particularly the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), are committed to fighting for the 30 per cent stake, DAP is prepared to work with them in any way possible to ensure Sarawak’s rights are upheld.
“We will fight for Sarawak’s rights together alongside GPS,” he affirmed during a press conference at the DAP Sarawak headquarters on Monday.
The statement follows DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen’s call in Parliament for the Sarawak government to secure a 30 per cent stake in PETRONAS, reinforcing the opposition party’s commitment to Sarawak’s oil and gas autonomy.
Meanwhile, DAPSY Sarawak secretary George Lam asserted that DAP Sarawak has consistently championed Sarawak’s interests, particularly in raising concerns about the Petroleum Development Act 1974 and the state’s oil and gas rights.
He stressed that these efforts are for the benefit of Sarawakians rather than for party interest.
“We urge GPS, especially SUPP, to come and explore ways to work together.
“If all Sarawak MPs and the state government work with the federal government, things will progress smoothly instead of engaging in blame games.
“Let’s work together to reclaim greater rights for Sarawakians,” he added.
