KUCHING: Opposition Democratic Action Party Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sarawak has welcomed the government’s decision to reduce the price of RON95 petrol to RM1.99 per litre for eligible Malaysians but called for a regionally sensitive and inclusive approach in its implementation.

Its treasurer Wong King Yii said the move, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is a timely one, particularly for Sarawakians who remain heavily dependent on private vehicles.

He stressed that for many in Sarawak, owning and driving a vehicle is not a luxury but a necessity.

“In the absence of viable alternatives, private transport is the only reliable way to access schools, hospitals, workplaces, and government services, especially for those living in remote and rural areas,” he said.

He warned that any increase in fuel prices would impose a disproportionate burden on Sarawakians, given the state’s unique geographic and infrastructural challenges.

Wong also expressed support for the principle of targeted subsidies, but cautioned against adopting a one-size-fits-all model that fails to take into account the lived realities of East Malaysians.

“The federal government must establish a transparent and regionally inclusive mechanism to ensure that no Sarawakian is left behind,” he said.

He added that petrol consumption in Sarawak is relatively low compared to the peninsula, meaning the cost of maintaining subsidies here would have minimal impact on national expenditure but significant benefits for the local population.

“We welcome this step forward, and call on the government to ensure that the targeted fuel subsidy is not only efficient, but also equitable and just for all Malaysians, regardless of region,” he said.
