KUCHING: A dashcam footage showing teenagers riding two motorcycles without helmets and valid licences has led to police action against the riders and motorcycle owners involved.
The video, posted on the Sarawak Roads Update Facebook page, caught the attention of the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, which launched checks to identify those involved.
Police later found that two motorcycles had been used by underage teenagers who did not hold valid driving licences.
Both the motorcycle owners and riders turned up at the Kuching traffic police office on Wednesday (Sept 2) to assist with investigations and further action.
The offences detected included riding without a valid driving licence, failing to wear a helmet and allowing an unlicensed individual to ride a motorcycle.
“Teenagers are reminded that riding without a licence or helmet is not a display of bravery, but a dangerous act that could have serious consequences.
“The road is not a place to show off or prove how brave you are,” the department warned.
Aside from that, police also urged parents and motorcycle owners to think twice before handing over their vehicles to children who are underage or do not have valid driving licences.
“Parents should not wait until their children are involved in an accident or face legal action before realising the consequences of allowing them to ride illegally.
“Sometimes, saying ‘no’ is what saves them,” the department said.
