SIBU: Sarawak Chinese Cultural Association (SCCA) has launched its Data Preservation and Digitisation Fund at a prominent hotel here on Saturday night.

According to its honorary president, Albert Lau Pek Kii, this is another newly created fund following the establishment of the Publishing and Research Fund, which holds great significance for the preservation of SCCA’s archives.

“For many years, our association has devoted itself to collecting and organising archival materials. After years of effort, we have amassed a considerable amount of valuable records.

“However, with the passage of time, many paper documents face various risks of deterioration, including material damage and usage limitations. If we do not take timely action, these precious historical records will gradually be lost.

“Although we have already been scanning some important documents for archiving, we have yet to create a comprehensive and systematic plan for digitisation,” he said at the fund launching.

Lau stressed that digitisation is a global trend for the long-term preservation and accessibility of information.

He pointed out that it not only effectively extends the lifespan of archives but also significantly improves the efficiency of information sharing and research.

This, he added, will provide valuable reference material for researchers and the members alike.

“This is a long-term effort requiring sustained investment.

“On this occasion, I call on all friends to join and support this project, to contribute more resources, and to help make the Data Preservation and Digitisation a key direction for our association’s historical records work,” Lau added.

The event, which also incorporated the SCCA’s 35th anniversary celebration dinner, was attended by Bawang Assan Assembyman, Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh, and SCCA’s President, Hii Yik Ping.
