KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has strictly prohibited open burning following a three-hectare bush fire in Petra Jaya amid ongoing hot and dry weather conditions.
In a statement today (Apr 5), DBKU said the incident at Jalan Sultan Tengah near Bangunan Sumber Alam on Saturday afternoon highlighted the heightened risk of fires and deteriorating air quality during the current dry spell.
Investigations at the site found that several cable rubbers had been burned by irresponsible individuals, triggering the blaze.
DBKU stressed that activities such as burning rubbish, garden waste or clearing open areas through fire are strictly prohibited and may result in legal action, as they pose safety risks and can affect public health due to haze.
“The current hot and dry weather can cause fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control, potentially leading to major incidents,” it said.
The city commission urged the public to remain vigilant, especially in fire-prone areas such as grass fields and bushland, and to use proper waste disposal methods, including the waste collection services provided by DBKU.
It also advised residents to reduce outdoor activities if temperatures become extreme or air quality worsens, and to immediately report any fire incidents to the authorities.
DBKU said enforcement will be intensified, adding that firm action may be taken under Section 113 of the Local Authorities Ordinance, 1996 against those found carrying out open burning.
It emphasised that public cooperation is crucial to ensure community safety and environmental sustainability.
