KUCHING: Street vendors operating throughout Ramadan are reminded to maintain food hygiene and ascertain they do not disrupt traffic flow to ensure public safety.
Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said although the authorities allow small traders to earn a living, they must still comply with the established regulations.
“DBKU has given flexibility for them to trade in various locations within the DBKU area, such as villages and other places.
“However, vendors operating by the roadside must ensure their businesses do not cause congestion or pose a danger to road users,” he said to reporters at the Satok Ramadan Bazaar opening ceremony, which was officiated by Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi here Sunday (Mar 2).
Hilmy explained that if vendors are found operating in unauthorised areas, the authorities will take appropriate action.
“DBKU enforcement officers will ensure these vendors cooperate with the authorities and relocate to more suitable locations to avoid traffic congestion.
“Therefore, I urge vendors who are not placed in the official Ramadan bazaars to cooperate with the authorities,” he added.
He also revealed that this year, DBKU has provided several official Ramadan bazaar sites, including Satok, Metro City, Kubah Ria, Sukma Ria, and new locations at Hikmah Exchange and Eco Mall Jalan Semariang.
He reminded vendors to always maintain cleanliness while selling food to ensure public health and well-being.
“We want all vendors to ensure the food they sell is clean and of good quality. The public should immediately report to the authorities if they find food being sold in an unhygienic condition or not meeting health standards.
“Visitors can directly contact the city hall or the Ministry of Health if they come across any food that does not meet hygiene standards,” he said.
