KUCHING: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has partnered with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) to develop a master plan aimed at achieving zero carbon emissions.

“This master plan will serve as a roadmap to reduce our carbon footprint.

“It is part of DBKU’s commitment to making Kuching North a city that prioritises environmental responsibility,” said DBKU Mayor, Datuk Hilmy Othman, during the Car Free Morning programme held today at Padang Merdeka.

The government has approved the plan, which will act as a key framework for guiding the city’s efforts in reducing carbon emissions and creating a sustainable future.

“During the Ramadan and Aidilfitri bazaars, we observed that both traders and visitors adhered to cleanliness standards, which demonstrates a positive shift in the community’s approach to sustainability,” Hilmy remarked.

He also noted the growing public awareness of environmental issues, particularly around cleanliness.

DBKU has also been working to foster inclusivity and unity through a variety of cultural events, such as celebrations for Hari Raya, Gawai, Christmas and Deepavali.

“These events, which have gained increasing popularity, provide a platform for Kuching’s diverse communities to come together and celebrate shared traditions,” he added.

“Even for Deepavali, celebrated by a smaller group in Kuching, we ensured it was observed with the same enthusiasm and recognition as other major festivals.”

To further support sustainability efforts, DBKU is promoting the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as part of its broader environmental agenda.

“This is just the beginning. We are collaborating with other government agencies to advocate for the widespread use of EVs as part of our commitment to reducing emissions,” he said.

With a strong focus on clean air and green initiatives, Kuching has already earned recognition for its excellent air quality.

“At one point, Kuching was ranked second in the world for air quality, and we are dedicated to maintaining this standard as we continue to work towards zero carbon emissions,” Hilmy said.
