KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will continue to prioritise sustainable, people-centred and innovation-driven urban development as the city moves into 2026, its mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman said.
In his 2026 New Year message, he said ongoing urban initiatives place strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability and environmental responsibility, in line with the Post-Covid Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
“Under PCDS 2030, DBKU will continue to strengthen modern infrastructure, improve public service delivery, and drive inclusive and sustainable economic growth, while advancing digital initiatives and the green economy,” he said.
Hilmy stressed that environmental sustainability would remain a key consideration in every development effort to safeguard the wellbeing of present and future generations.
Reflecting on achievements recorded in 2025, he said DBKU would work to further enhance its performance in 2026, positioning Kuching North as a city that is not only liveable, but also competitive at the national and global levels.
“Our success requires the strong support of the people of Kuching North. We must continue to move forward together as a united, creative and innovative community,” he said.
He added that DBKU would continue to prioritise child- and elderly-friendly development, quality public facilities and inclusive economic growth.
Hilmy expressed appreciation to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his leadership, trust and support towards DBKU in carrying out its mandate.
“DBKU remains committed to supporting the Premier’s vision of making Sarawak — especially Kuching North — a sustainable, inclusive and future-ready city,” he said.
He noted that under the Premier’s leadership, development initiatives have been implemented across infrastructure, digitalisation, green economy, social development and education — efforts which, he said, have enhanced quality of life and strengthened Kuching North’s position as a progressive and people-friendly city.
Hilmy also thanked Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, as well as elected representatives within the DBKU administrative area, for their continued cooperation in ensuring the smooth implementation of strategic development projects.
Hilmy expressed his appreciation to the Sarawak government and residents for their continued trust and cooperation.
“Let us welcome 2026 with renewed spirit and commitment to drive our city towards excellence, sustainability and shared wellbeing. May Kuching North continue to grow as a city that is clean, beautiful, safe, smart and sustainable,” he said.
