KUCHING: Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has applied to the Ministry of Transport for permission to clamp vehicles parked haphazardly in the city and causing traffic jams.
DBKU Member, Dato Wee Hong Seng said DBKU was currently in the final stages of talks with the ministry.
“We hope to have the greenlight to clamp vehicles as soon as possible and within this year,” he told a press conference at Waterfront Hotel here yesterday.
“This is one method of enforcement to reduce traffic congestion in the city that is getting worse as a result of the bad attitude of vehicle owners,” Wee said.
“I expect the penalties to be imposed by DBKU will be very similar to the summonses issued by the police because enforcement is not effective if the penalties are as low as RM10 or RM20,” he pointed out.
Wee added that for the moment, to prevent indiscriminate parking of vehicles, DBKU had requested the assistance of the police to take action against the owners of the vehicles by issuing summonses of up to RM100 each.
In addition, he stressed that in future, wheel clamping would implemented by DBKU in all areas of administration and not limited to the city centre.
“At the moment, we have no other choice because many motorists park their vehicles haphazardly, and we cannot continue to rely on the help of the police,”he explained.
