KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is set to deepen collaboration with the local creative community to strengthen Kuching’s identity as a City of Culture, says its mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman.

Speaking at the 40th Annual Art Show of the Sarawak Artists Society (SAS) themed “Heritage Reloaded” at Westbury Galleria last night, he said DBKU aims to collaborate with the Society to organise a major art festival in conjunction with Kuching City Day 2026.

“It is my hope that DBKU and SAS can collaborate next year to organise a special art festival in conjunction with Kuching City Day 2026.

“Together, we can create something truly meaningful, an event that celebrates art, culture and our shared identity,” he said.

Hilmy said the proposed collaboration would align with Kuching’s international recognition as a World Craft Council City of Crafts, a title awarded in 2019 for its commitment to craftsmanship, creativity and innovation.

“This recognition places Kuching on the global map as a city where heritage skills are preserved, artisans are empowered and craft is elevated into true art.

“It reflects our deep respect for cultural identity and our ability to transform tradition into contemporary expression,” he added.

The mayor commended SAS for its four decades of contribution to Sarawak’s art scene, describing the milestone as a remarkable achievement that has nurtured local talent and strengthened cultural appreciation.

He said the exhibition’s theme, “Heritage Reloaded”, aptly reflects how artists continue to bridge the past and present through innovation.

“Art is not merely a reflection of our past, but a dynamic force that breathes new life into our traditions and stories,” he said.

Hilmy also highlighted DBKU’s ongoing support for creative initiatives, including exhibitions such as Pameran Solo Lukisan Kucing by Jaja Yusof, Pameran Seni Islam organised by UNIMAS and Mujarad Alam Borneo by Azrian Ali.

He added that DBKU is preparing for the Borneo International Islamic Art and Digital Technology Expo 2026 to further showcase artistic innovation.

“Art transforms how we see our surroundings and strengthens our pride as Kuchingites, Sarawakians and Malaysians,” he said before declaring open the 40th Annual Art Show of the Sarawak Artists Society, “Heritage Reloaded.”
