KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has begun upgrading works on the Boyan–Gersik Jetty to resolve safety issues affecting residents and visitors who depend on the route for their daily commute.

The construction period for this project is scheduled from Dec 4 to June 3, 2026.

DBKU said previously they have closed the facility after deeming the existing structure unsafe, although some residents continued using it despite the issued notice.

“The upgrade involves replacing the existing pontoon with a pre-fabricated HDPE structure equipped with micropiles for the guide pillar, as well as a new G.I Jetty Gangway.

“The waiting shed will also undergo repairs, including improvements to the roof, flooring and safety features.

“In addition, the jetty platform level will be raised to align with the Boyan Linkway for safer and smoother movement of users,” it said in a statement.

DBKU also urged the public to comply with the closure order throughout the construction period to prevent any risk of accidents.

“DBKU once again emphasises the importance of adhering to the closure order to avoid any risk of accidents, and remains committed to providing more sustainable, inclusive, and safe urban infrastructure for the wellbeing of residents and continued development of the Kuching city waterfront area,” it said.
