KUCHING: The Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS) has launched its Islamic Banking Window, DBOS Hana Islamic.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the launch presents a timely and strategic opportunity for DBOS to position Sarawak within the global Islamic finance ecosystem, ushering in a new era defined by scale, sustainability and strategic integration.

“DBOS’ Islamic banking is guided by Shariah principles, provides and upholds the values of fairness, justice, social responsibility, and integrity.

“With DBOS’ Islamic Banking Window initiative, DBOS not only strengthens its financial offerings but also reinforces Sarawak’s commitment to inclusive and value based development,” he said in his speech during the DBOS Integrity Day themed ‘Advancing Sarawak With Integrity’ held at a hotel here today (Nov 17).

He said the global Islamic finance sector has witnessed remarkable growth in the post-pandemic era.

Citing the Standard Chartered Bank’s report “Islamic Banking for Financial Institutions: Unlocking Growth Amidst Global Shifts”, he said Shariah-compliant financial assets—including Islamic banking, sukuk (Islamic bonds), and investment funds – surpassing USD5.5 trillion in 2024 and are projected to reach USD7.5 trillion by 2028.

Meanwhile, DBOS chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Ghani said the launch reflects DBOS’s commitment to responsible financing that is ethical, inclusive, and accountable, which will benefit the greater community.

Morshidi said DBOS Islamic Banking Window provides an opportunity for more Islamic-based financing.

“This sector is growing very fast in Malaysia and out of the total loan, 47% is Islamic Banking and is growing fast every year,” he added.

At the same event, Shariah certificate for Banking Products was awarded to DBOS by Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia and four strategic collaborative agreements were exchanged between DBOS and Public Works Department Sarawak (JKR), Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Center (SAIC) Sdn Bhd, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad and RAM Rating Services Berhad.
