BAU: Singapore is interested in buying prawns, dehydrated terung asam (eggplant) and guava, and tilapia fish from Sarawak.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas revealed this was made known during the recent opening of the Sarawak Trade and Tourism Office in the island republic recently.
“This is another good beginning. Our farmers and agropreneurs should make full use of this opportunity,” he said during the launching of Serembu Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) at Kampung Skio last Sunday.
He said Sarawak is already exporting 1,200 live pigs each week to Singapore, and demand is expected to increase.

“Now that we have a new market for our prawns, terung asam, guava and tilapia, we must ensure we have constant volumes.
“At the same time, we must not neglect the quality which will allow us to penetrate outside markets,” he stressed.
Uggah said both aspects could be ensured through adopting modern high-tech farming methods like fertigation.
He then advised GPS elected representatives to work out suitable programmes in their areas to encourage people, especially youths, to take up such farming.
“The government is now in the midst of transforming the state agriculture sector through modern
farming. And this is to make the state a net exporter of food by the year 2030, which is in line with the
aspiration of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.”
Uggah, who is Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Minister, stressed that this needed the support and participation of all, including elected representatives.
At the function, Uggah also announced a grant of RM500,000 for growing ginger, pineapple and baby corn in the area.
He also approved RM100,000 to upgrade the St Edward’s Catholic church.
