KUCHING: The Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC) has opened applications for the DE Rantau Sarawak Pass, marking a significant step towards positioning the state as Asean’s leading destination for digital nomads and remote professionals.

Developed in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and supported by the Sarawak government, the initiative introduces a Professional Visit Pass (PVP) which allows eligible digital freelancers and remote workers to reside and work in Sarawak for a period of up to 12 months, with the option to renew for another year.

The initiative represents the first phase of the Sarawak Digital Residency Programme (SDRP), a key component of Sarawak’s Digital Economy Strategy, which aims to attract international talent, enhance digital mobility, and strengthen the state’s innovation ecosystem.

SDEC chief executive officer Datuk Sudarnoto Osman said the initiative demonstrates Sarawak’s commitment to fostering a dynamic digital environment that welcomes global professionals and nurtures a sustainable, innovation-driven economy.

“The DE Rantau Sarawak Pass reflects Sarawak’s readiness to embrace international digital professionals while strengthening our local ecosystem founded on innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability,” he said in a statement.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had previously emphasised the state’s vision to advance its digital economy and establish Sarawak as a preferred destination for remote-working professionals.

Applications for the DE Rantau Sarawak Pass can be submitted through https://sdec.com.my/web/derantausarawak/. The pass offers a Professional Visit Pass that is valid for a period of three to twelve months and may be renewed for an additional year.

It is open to digital freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote professionals working in the technology and creative sectors, including digital influencers. The programme is also family-friendly, allowing pass holders to bring along their spouse, children, and parents.

Sarawak offers a distinctive advantage with its modern infrastructure, affordability, world-class biodiversity, and rich cultural heritage.

SDEC stated that Sarawak offers a conducive environment for digital professionals, combining modern infrastructure with a high quality of life, from riverside cafés in Kuching to creative hubs and eco-friendly retreats across the state.

In line with the initiative, SDEC is also inviting local partners including co-working space operators, tourism providers, and digital service firms to collaborate in developing a vibrant and inclusive digital nomad ecosystem in Sarawak.
