KUCHING: The decision on whether the top positions in Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) will be contested in this year’s party election depends on proposals from the grassroots.
PKR secretary-general Senator Dr Fuziah Salleh said that branch-level general meetings will be held to discuss these proposals before they are brought to the central level.
“The branch-level general meetings will begin soon. Some branches will start this weekend, while most will commence next weekend.
“We will wait for grassroots proposals, as the party president, who is also the Prime Minister, has said that the decision is in their hands.
“Since this is a democratic party, we will listen to what the grassroots have to say,” she said when met by reporters after conducting the Ops Kita Gempur Sarawak Edition near Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal yesterday (Feb 22).
Dr Fuziah added that party election nominations will take place in April after the branch-level meetings.
When asked for her opinion on whether the top position should be contested, she said the decision was not hers to make.
“My role as secretary-general is to ensure that the election process and congress run smoothly. Right now, we are actively updating our membership records to prepare for the branch-level elections.
“So, we will listen first, and then nominations will follow in early April,” she said.
She added that the party’s congress will be held from May 23 to 25, with central-level elections for the president, deputy president, vice presidents, and other key positions taking place on May 24.
