SAMARAHAN: Defending champions Kuching were forced to dig deep to keep their title defence alive, battling through a tough start to book their place in the quarter-finals of the men’s team category at the 2025 Sarawak Cup Sepak Takraw Championship.

The team stumbled in their opening Group D clash, suffering a narrow 2–1 defeat to Sibu — a wake-up call that jolted the champions into action.

They bounced back with grit and determination in their second match, edging past hosts Samarahan 2–1 in a must-win encounter that secured their berth among the top eight.

The final match of day 1 last night (Jun 18) at the Samarahan Indoor Stadium was a thrilling back-and-forth battle, with momentum swinging wildly and fans from both sides trading cheers with every point.

The quarter-final stage today (Jun 19), features the top teams from each group: Serian and Bintulu (Group A), Miri and Limbang (Group B), Sri Aman and Mukah (Group C), and Kuching and Samarahan (Group D).

Tournament chairman Mohd. Nizam Wang said the knockout rounds are expected to deliver fireworks.

“We’re anticipating fierce battles in today’s quarter-finals.

“Every team will be giving their all to punch their ticket to the semi-finals,” Nizam told Sarawak Tribune.

Semi-final matches are set to take place later this afternoon, as the race for the Sarawak Cup intensifies.

Kuching will face Miri and Sri Aman will take on Serian at 8.30 am, while Samarahan meets Mukah and Bintulu plays Limbang at 11 am in the quarter-finals.
