KUCHING: Kuala Rajang has great potential for algae breeding to produce biofuels and other renewable energies.

Deputy Minister of Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Datuk Len Talif Salleh said the area is suitable for algae breeding due to the hot weather and the position of the sunlight.

In addition, he said Kuala Rajang is a coastal area that has potential for facilitating the breeding of algae.

“Research on this is still ongoing and it can be commercialised in the future. The area is suitable for the production of algae which can be used economically and so on,” he said when met by the media at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house event at his residence, here today (Apr 23).

Len, who is also the Kuala Rajang assemblyman, said that the mangrove swamp forest in the area can also be used for carbon trading activities.

Thus, he said, discussions are currently ongoing to commercialise carbon trading.

“The first process is to make an assessment to assess how much carbon is in the forest area. We will analyse it first so that they can buy and sell in agreement in terms of the amount of carbon in a certain area,” he said.

According to him, mangrove swamp forests have ten times the carbon storage when compared to other forests.

“We can take advantage of this mangrove forest in terms of carbon trading, so we can reduce the deforestation of mangrove swamp forests to ensure that this carbon trading can be improved in the future,” he said.
