KUCHING: Residents of Kampung Desa Wira are banking on a flood mitigation project here to reduce recurring floods that have disrupted lives and damaged properties for years.

Heavy rainfall on Dec 31 last year and in January this year forced 277 residents from 73 families to evacuate to relief centres for five days.

A committee member from Surau Nurul Najihin described the project as a long-awaited solution bringing renewed hope to flood-prone Desa Wira communities.

“The flood mitigation project is a source of hope for Desa Wira, and we are grateful solutions are finally being implemented,” he said.

The two-phase flood mitigation project was launched in 2025 under the initiative of Deputy Premier and Batu Kawa assemblyman Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

Phase One of the project is nearing completion and has already demonstrated positive impacts, including noticeably reduced flood levels during heavy rainfall.

On Jan 27, the Department of Drainage and Irrigation Kuching Division held a town hall session to update residents on project progress.

The session attracted about 150 residents, alongside officials from government agencies, local authorities, community leaders, consultants and contractors.
