BETONG: The digital economy has made it possible for women to significantly improve their standard of living – being mothers and entrepreneurs at the same time.
Education also played a vital role in empowering women, making them aware of the vast opportunities in various industries.
Through the many platforms provided by the government, many mothers have left their jobs to venture into entrepreneurship.
Statistics in 2017 showed that over 80 per cent of entrepreneurs registered with the Malay Traders and Entrepreneurs Association were women.
Its chairwoman Datin Junaidah Mohamed said the percentage of women either working or involved in entrepreneurship had gone up from 45 per cent in 2012 to 54 per cent in 2016.
A survey at an event celebrating International Women’s Day here recently showed that women are using the digital economy to grow their businesses.
Local resident, Dayang Madinah Abang Yaman from Kampung Melayu Betong, said women, especially housewives, single mothers and senior citizens, must prepare themselves to face challenges.
“While the government is doing its best in coming up with policies to help, we women should learn new things ourselves in order to ensure our place in the digital market.”
Meanwhile, Kampung Beladin resident Suhanda Sari said women should grab any opportunities available to improve their lives.
“Women today must be able to occupy themselves, to move around. Stand by our own two feet and make the best decisions.
“It is all about effort and hard work. That’s the best recipe for success,” she said.
