MUKAH: The digitalisation of the retail sector is one of the key measures in strengthening Malaysia’s domestic trade, particularly in Sarawak.

Tellian assemblyman Royston Valentine emphasised that this was a crucial matter for both traders and consumers.

“With the introduction of the Retail Sector Digitalisation Initiative ReDI Travel Programme for the Sabah and Sarawak Zones, the initiative serves as advocacy for traders, helping them adapt to the evolving market landscape which is becoming increasingly digital.

“For instance, by adopting e-wallets, traders can offer faster and safer payment options to consumers. This not only brings convenience to the local community but also benefits foreign tourists,” he said.

He made these remarks during the Consumer Chat Programme with Market Traders, Community Leaders and Mukah Residents, held in conjunction with the ReDI Travel Programme organised by the Mukah Consumer Movement at Stabak Mukah on Friday.

Royston further noted that in the context of the Mukah Market, more traders were encouraged to seize this opportunity to streamline buying and selling activities for the benefit of both businesses and consumers.

He explained that initiatives like ReDI enabled the local business sector to advance in step with technological developments.

On the programme’s objectives, Royston stated that it aimed to provide digital advocacy through direct engagement and visits to rural areas.

“In addition, the programme sought to boost the confidence of rural traders and consumers in adopting and using e-wallet facilities.

“It also offers a platform for sharing best practices among traders, industry players and key stakeholders such as local authorities.

“Most importantly, it helps narrow the digital gap for rural traders through a more targeted and effective advocacy approach,” he explained.

Royston expressed his belief that digitalisation represented the foundation for a brighter future for the nation’s retail sector.

He also conveyed his confidence that traders in Mukah and throughout Sarawak were increasingly prepared to meet challenges and capitalise on opportunities in an ever more competitive market environment.

At the same time, Royston encouraged the public to embrace these opportunities to build a smarter, more tech-savvy and well-informed consumer society.

Also present at the event were Sarawak Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living KPDN section head Fahmi Hasrar, Mukah KPDN Branch head Salihin Den, Mukah Division Deputy Resident Shafrie Saili and Mukah District Officer Peleadzman Ahip.
