KUCHING: A dual carriageway should be const ructed f rom Bintangor Town centre to Taman Bintang to overcome the problem of traffic congestion, said Meradong Assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing. He said that due to the increase in population and vehicles, the said stretch of road is heavily congested during peak hours.

“The only solution is the construction of a dual carriageway,” he said in his debate speech during the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, yesterday. He added the stretch of road has coped with the growing population in the housing estates on both sides of the road and with three primary schools, two secondary schools and one kindergarten. “The local council, Meradong Julau District Council (MDMJ) had put up the said proposal but so far did not receive any positive response from the ministry. “I would, therefore, like to urge the Ministry concerned to look into the problem seriously and assist us to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, he also proposed to the Ministry concerned on the need for infrastructure development for Sg Meradong resettlement scheme and light industrial estates.

“ l wish to take this opportunity to thank the State Government for approving this resettlement scheme project that was well received by the people of Meradong when it was opened for application from qualified applicants a few years back. “However, the existing infrastructure works to the resettlement scheme are not satisfactory due to the poor soil conditions.

“I would therefore like to urge the Ministry concerned to allocate some fund to upgrade the existing infrastructure works and complete the remaining infrastructure works so that more people can have a chance to own a house under this resettlement scheme,” he stressed.

“Moreover, I was made to understand that there are also Light Industrial Lots planned for industrial activities for local small and medium entrepreneurs. By doing so, we can attract more people to move back to Meradong.

More over, the existing Light lndustrial Factories along Jalan Kilang are too near to housing estates and unsuitable for industrial activities any longer,” he pointed out.
