PHNOM PENH: Sarawak is eyeing a direct flight route to Phnom Penh, Cambodia to boost regional connectivity.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this could become a reality once Sarawak operates its own airline.

“Cambodia, with its rich history, is a potential destination for a direct flight, taking about two hours,” he told reporters after a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet today (Dec 7).

Abang Johari, who attended the 20th Regional Islamic Da’wah Council of Southeast Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) General Assembly, also expressed interest in collaborating with Cambodia on its halal industry.

“Cambodia is a significant rice producer. We aim to work together in the food industry, especially rice production, and explore sourcing rice seeds to develop Sarawak’s rice industry.

“We could share technologies to further strengthen this effort,” he added.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Deputy Minister of Economy Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, Honorary Secretary of RISEAP Datuk Mohamad Marzuki Mohamad Omar and the President of the Sarawak Islamic Council Datuk Misnu Taha.
