The Sarawak government is exploring the potential introduction of direct international flight routes into Miri to strengthen the state’s international air connectivity.

Deputy Minister for Transport Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to improve accessibility and support Sarawak’s tourism and economic development agenda.

“The Sarawak government is working closely with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad, Sarawak Tourism Board and other relevant agencies to encourage new international routes into Sarawak, including Miri,” he said.

He was responding to Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang during the Q&A session today.

According to him, the discussions focus on assessing commercial viability and market demand before any direct international services are introduced into the northern city.

Dr Jerip added that the Sarawak government, through AirBorneo, is also evaluating opportunities for direct international routes connecting Sarawak with ASEAN countries and nearby regional destinations.

He said the evaluation forms part of broader plans to enhance regional connectivity and improve travel convenience for both business and leisure travellers visiting Sarawak.

“Miri has long been regarded as one of Sarawak’s key gateways due to its strategic location and growing tourism industry, particularly within the northern region of the state.

“The proposed expansion of international air connectivity is expected to strengthen tourism, attract investments, and stimulate economic growth in Miri and surrounding areas,” he said.
