SIBU: In honour of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day, the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu branch held its Annual Inspection Parade 2025 today (May 18).

Held at the Tun Zaidi Stadium, the event marked not only a proud tradition of the MRCS Sibu branch but also served as a powerful symbol of unity, discipline and unwavering dedication to humanitarian service.

MRCS Sibu chairman Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee said the precision in marching, sharp salutes, and the proud display of the Red Crescent colours reflected the cadets’ readiness to serve selflessly in times of crisis.

“As long as there is a need, there will be someone wearing the Red Crescent emblem ready to serve, to comfort and to heal.

“This platform inspires our members to grow in responsibility and unity, guided by compassion, resilience and a deep sense of duty,” he said.

Chua added that the branch aims to nurture its youth members to progress from junior to cadet, then to Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD), encouraging lifelong contribution to the humanitarian sector.

“The impact of their good deeds is profound as they move forward in unison, with strength, unity and purpose,” he said.

On the event, he said it commemorated with the World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day 2025, celebrated globally on May 8 to honour the birth anniversary of Jean Henry Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

“The theme for this year’s celebration, ‘On the Side of Humanity’, reflects our daily mission — to put people first, respond with compassion and extend care regardless of background, status or belief.

“It is a call to stand firmly on the side of kindness, empathy and service, while upholding the seven fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality,” he said.

Chua also expressed his appreciation to the many individuals and organisations that support the MRCS cause.

Meanwhile, Sibu District assistant education officer Jeremy Ling Beng Leh said MRCS, as one of the school uniformed bodies, plays a vital role in shaping students to be not only academically capable but also grounded in humanitarian values and civic responsibility.

“I urge schools, parents and the community to continue supporting MRCS’s role in developing compassionate and socially conscious individuals,” he said.

Also present were MRCS Sibu branch advisor Datuk Lau Ngie Hua and deputy chairman Hii Sieh Toh.
